Assalamualaikum
One of the news that I read today is about the students segregation at SMK Seremban. Apparently it was by the order of the headmaster who is currently away on Hajj. His order were implemented at the beginning of the school term and no teacher dared to question him. The boys and girls are separated in class, library, canteen and even walkways! The school even built a separate building for the classes so that the boys & girls don't mix.
To me, the idea of segregation is good as it controls the environment where there is no mixing between different sexes. With social problems on the escalate nowadays, no wonder the HM took that action I guess. But for total segregation I think its best to go to all boys or all girls schools. At least there the students can be a lot "free" to do their things without feeling inhibited by whether what they're doing right or wrong.
But co-ed schools are good too. I mean, take my case for example. I went to co-ed Islamic school. My class have boys & girls together in one class, although the girls occupy the right/left/back of the class and the boys occupies the other half, it was no problem at all!!!
We learn how to conduct ourselves in an Islamic environment. We put into action what was already instill in the Qur'an & Hadith. We, boys & girls, work together to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of our class. Sure, there was cooperation but there was no free mixing around.
I think co-ed in Islamic environment school are good because it prepares you for the outside world. In universities, you still have to mix around with other people, male or female, but you have already learned how to behave appropriately and in manners that is within the Syariah context.Unless you are studying in all male/female universities, that's a different scenario altogether. Even in the working world you will have to work with the opposite sexes. It's inevitable.
I agree with co-ed school provided it's an Islamic one, even if they are not, then the parents & teachers have to instill in their children and pupils the values of Islam. We don't want them to become social misfit later on do we? After all they will be our future leaders, yours and mine.
