My Laptop is KO-ed!
My laptop is KO-ed and I feel like 'patah kaki' & 'patah otak'!!!
Adoi..what am I to do. All my files are in there - all my coursework files. My office work is safe and sound in an external hardisk.
My laptop cannot be switched on at all! So I've asked my friend to send it to a service centre for repair. So I don't know when I'll get it back. :(
p/s: I'm updating from a computer in the office.
A Bookish Household
I found this interesting article by Abby Wong in The Sunday Star, 23/08/09.
REMEMBER that bookworm I was enamoured of because he was reading in public? The one I wrote about in Read, men! (Book Nook, April 19)? Well, I am happy to share with you, dear reader, that bookish fate not only brought us together again but that we then chatted, dated, and are now husband and wife, living with two young children who are showing early signs of bookishness.
Those who don’t love books might think my life with a bookworm would be boring. On the contrary. Though not as intense a reader as he was when I first laid eyes on him, Mr Bookworm still reads – and still isn’t satisfied with merely reading about things and places. He has to also see it, smell it, feel it, use it, observe it or even live it. And that, dear readers, certainly makes for an interesting life!
Once, a few years ago, mesmerised by the crowded and filthy Bombay (now Mumbai) that he read about in Suketu Mehta’s Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found, Mr Bookworm booked a flight to Bombay for the two of us – his curiosity about the city described in those pages would not let him rest until he had been there.
So, with book in bag and camera in hand, we were soon standing on top of a hill overseeing the Indian city’s slums. Quietly observing, he paid little attention to the pungent smell that emanated from the garbage all around us, and was absolutely saddened by the filth the people had to live in.
Starring at his face, I knew then my life would never be boring with Mr Bookworm because, together, we would learn and experience the world through reading and travelling.
It was our love for books that brought us together, and it is this love that has helped us build a beautiful home for our two young children. Not that our home is neat and tidy because books often lie around everywhere for various reasons.
Sitting in the garage these days is my copy of The Forever War by Dexter Filkins that I read whenever I am in there watching over my daughter as she plays. Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle – an old book from 1998 that I’m only reading now for some unfathomable reason – sits on our kitchen table amidst the clutter, ready for me to enjoy when I have my afternoon coffee and cookies.
Randy Charles Epping’s interesting The 21st Century Economy is on the bedside table, weekly magazines are scattered in the bathroom, readily allowing us to catch up on worldly affairs during our own private moments.
But in the early days, Mr Bookworm would stare at me from the corners of his eyes and frown at the books I’d leave scattered everywhere at first, silently protesting my habit of cluttering up the house. It was not until a few years ago when we ran out of space on our bookshelves did he join me in my way of living.
One day, to my pleasant surprise, Mr Bookworm placed bookends on some of the window sills in the house. “In this crazy world of hassling and bustling, a row of books in a window next to a potted fern can be highly effective in paring down our overly heightened senses,” Mr Bookworm pronounced. I could not agree more.
And so, even our windows became cluttered with books. Though some of the potted ferns have disappeared, our home remains obstinately full of bookish charm. I think so, anyway.
Perhaps I feel this way because I did not grow up in a book-cluttered house. Neither Mr Shakespeare nor Mr Orwell nor other great literary names were housemates then. My obsession with books did not start until I was in my teens, when my habit of spying people reading officially became a fetish at my first workplace, a bookstore.
What I did not experience in my childhood I do not want my children to miss. The best way, we figure, to make books their best friends is by creating a home in which books get in their way, in which books are often pronounced lost but later found in the most unexpected of places, in which books are like spices, bread, pencils, utensils, plants, constantly reminding our children of their importance – as well as unimportance in that they are an ordinary, not-to-be-remarked-upon part of life.
As my six-year-old son begins to take his first tiny steps into the magical world of Harry Potter, Mr Bookworm is scouting for a bigger house to make room for a bigger nook to accommodate the growing number of books and bookworms. “The ferns have to be outside this time,” he says, “but the bonsai stays in.”
What can I say? Bonsai has become his new engrossment thanks to a copy of Bonsai Basics he recently borrowed from the local library. As with Mumbai, he has to see it, smell it, feel it, use it, observe it, and live with it. My kind of guy.

1st Day of Ramadhan
1st day of Ramadhan was full of challenges for me in terms of health. The night after Tarawih prayers I started feeling nauseas. And true enough I started vomiting the whole night & having diarrhea until the next day. I couldn't even sleep properly. I woke up every 1 to 2 hours to rush to the toilet. My housemate were all sleeping soundly so I was glad I didn't disturb their sleep.
During sahur I couldn't even eat anything as I was afraid I would throw up after that. I manage to eat 2 kurma & half a glass of warm water. I was supposed to go back to Shah Alam that morning as my Masters group is having discussion for our assignments. But I was so weak from all that vomitting & diarrhea that I couldn't even stand up. After Sahur I even performed the Solat Sunat Hajat asking God to grant me the strength to fast for the day.
While my housemates all went to work I stayed at home sleeping most of the day. And I started having fever too. But I really wanted to go home as I feel that I'll get better in a familiar surrounding with my family (guess I miss my mom so much).
At 6pm I departed from Tanjung Malim to Shah Alam with my housemate. I wanted her to drive my car but I guess I'm the kind of person who don't want to bother people too much, so I drove myself, even though at that time I was having fever.
We reach her housemate house in Shah Alam just in time to break fast. I could only eat kurma & little pieces of murtabak & drank a glass of orange juice. My mother SMS'ed me asking whether I was coming home & was I having fever as my family was going to my grandmother's house. I told I was, and my mother replied that she will ask someone to come home and accompany me.
I went home after break fast at my friend's house and after performing the Maghrib prayer I slept the whole night. My mother SMS'ed me that night that no one could come home to accompany me and asked me to take care of myself. I was ok with that.
Sahur this morning was also difficult for me. My mother left some spaghetti for me the night before. I was hungry and tried to eat more but all I could swallow was a spoonful and no more. After Subuh I again slept until afternoon so that my fever will subside. But I do get that nauseas feeling until now.
All in all it reminded me that whatever we plan Allah decided.
Ramadhan Kareem
Ramadhan Kareem buat semua pembaca. Tak pun masak sendiri kalau diaorg tak bangun sahur.
Apa-apa pun rasa tak sabar nak Solat Sunat Tarawih malam ni, di tempat baru pula tu.
p/S: Niat puasa semua malam ni ye :D
Why I Wear Boots
I have worn ankle length boots since 2002. I love boots because it protects my ankle from breaking (since I love to wear high heels) if I trip. Furthermore it protects the whole feet & socks from dust.
I have since then owned 7 pairs. I always buy new ones when the old ones cannot be worn anymore. Normally they'll last about a year or more before it needs replacing.
Of all my friends who saw me wore boots only 1 got it right on the reason why I wore boots :D and it's comfortable.
Memories
I'm now at home in Klang after some weekends away from home (currently I'm residing in Tanjung Malim, Perak some 100km away from Klang). I was browsing through the folders in the computers at home when I happened to see this picture:
I love traveling too much. It's in my blood I guess. In Malaysia, I haven't been to Sarawak only. I've been to Sabah last month with my dad. But I was left to explore KK on my own since my dad had to visit practical students all over Sabah anyway.
I love Hong Kong too. You can get around practically anywhere with the reliable public transport. And the architecture is so modern!
I've never been to Bandung or Indonesia though. I would love too but I've no friends to go with. Traveling to Indonesia would be like returning to my maternal grandparents home where they came from before migrating to Mersing, Johor in 1942, especially my arwah Atuk Hassan. I have his picture when he was 10 years old with his uncle before sailing to Mersing, Johor from Banjarmasin, Indonesia. I guess that's why I loved the sea so much. It's in my blood.
Now where should I go next year?
Kelengkapan Rumah
Alhamdulillah semalam dah lengkap kelengkapan rumah aku kat Tanjung Malim ni.
Lagipun bila beli makanan masa tengah lapar semua depan mata nak diborong. Bila time berbuka tak habis.
Sakit Kepala
Lately I've been having mild migraine attacks at no specific time. My handbag is full of medication such as Ponstan & Uphamol 500. Panadol? It doesn't work for me anymore. I know I shouldn't pop a lot of these pills. But the things is, when the headache attacks comes, my mood will turn sour and will affect my colleagues as I tend to lash out at them or I will not be coorperative with them.
So to safeguard the harmonious relationship with colleagues in the office, I'm willing to sacrifice my 'health conscious' and pop the yellow & white pills. See..I'm a good person.
Oh..I do cut down on the 'sukatan'. Only 1 pill at a time.
Sedang Menunggu Buku
Hari ni dah masuk suku ke-3 tahun 2009. Pembelian buku aku sungguh tidak memberangsangkan. Tidak sampai lagi Rm500. Hmm..sebenarnya aku sedang menunggu buku yg dipesan dari MPH bulan 6 hari tu. Buku Dan Brown yang terbaru. Nampak gayanya bulan depan baru sampai buku tu. Sambil tu baca la buku-buku tahun lepas yang belum habis dibaca pun.
Satu masalah aku ni, tak boleh nak baca buku diluar lingkungan minat. Nak baca buku chic-lit rasa terhalang je. Kalau pegi kedai tu duk pegang-pegang, fikir nak beli, tak nak, nak beli, tak nak. Akhirnya letak balik kat rak. Nak pinjam pun rasa macam entah bila nak baca. Semacam ada halangan minda nak membaca buku-buku macam tu.
Books & An Update
Berikut senarai nya:
- Handle With Care: Motivating & Retaining Employees - Barbara A. Glanz
- Malaysia Dalam Peralihan: Ceritalah 1 - Karim Raslan
- The One-Page Project Manager - Clark A. Campbell

Akak tau buku akak banyak buku hilang terutamanya semua buku karya Habiburrahaman El Shirazy & Zaid Akhtar. Akak sayang buku tau. Itulah harta akak!
