My Office & Books

Monday, 26 October 2009
Assalamualaikum,

Ni gambar ofis aku kat site. Pejabat Design Manager. Sambil tu stok buku untuk baca bila bosan. Paling penting buku Puzzle tuh. Boleh release tension.

Yeay! I finally got them

Tuesday, 15 September 2009
Assalamualaikum,

I'm very excited this afternoon because books that I've bought 5 months ago from MPH Online have finally arrived. The books are

1. Dan Brown - The Lost Symbol

Book Description
Dan Brown’s new novel, the eagerly awaited follow-up to his #1 international phenomenon, The Da Vinci Code, which was the bestselling hardcover adult novel of all time, will be published on September 15, 2009.

The Lost Symbol will once again feature Dan Brown’s unforgettable protagonist, Robert Langdon. The Lost Symbol is a brilliant and compelling thriller. Dan Brown’s prodigious talent for storytelling, infused with history, codes and intrigue, is on full display in this new book. This is one of the most anticipated publications in recent history, and it was well worth the wait,” said Sonny Mehta, Chairman and Editor in Chief of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.

Brown’s longtime editor, Jason Kaufman, Vice President and Executive Editor at Doubleday said, “Nothing ever is as it first appears in a Dan Brown novel. This book’s narrative takes place in a twelve-hour period, and from the first page, Dan’s readers will feel the thrill of discovery as they follow Robert Langdon through a masterful and unexpected new landscape. The Lost Symbol is full of surprises.”

"This novel has been a strange and wonderful journey," said Brown. "Weaving five years of research into the story's twelve-hour timeframe was an exhilarating challenge. Robert Langdon’s life clearly moves a lot faster than mine."

And I got it today 15 September 2009! Yeay! I waited 5 months because I pre-ordered the book when it wasn't even published yet. I got this book at RM70.00 (it's a hard-cover book)

and..

2. Mary Clark Higgins - Just Take My Heart
I had to wait 5 months due to Dan Brown's book was in the same parcel. I didn't want to waste RM7 just for MPH to post this book first.

Book Description:
Natalie Raines, one of Broadway's brightest stars, accidentally discovers who killed her former roommate and sets in motion a series of shocking events that puts more than one life in extreme peril.

While Natalie and her roommate, Jamie Evans, were both struggling young actresses, Jamie had been involved with a mysterious married man to whom she referred only by nickname. Natalie comes face to face with him years later and inadvertently addresses him by the nickname Jamie had used. A few days later, Natalie is found in her home in Closter, New Jersey, dying from a gunshot wound.

Immediately the police suspect Natalie's theatrical agent and soon-to-be-ex-husband, Gregg Aldrich. He had long been a "person of interest" and was known to have stalked Natalie to find out if she was seeing another man. But no charges are brought against him until two years later, when Jimmy Easton, a career criminal, suddenly comes forward to claim that Aldrich had tried to hire him to kill his wife. Easton knows details about the Aldrich home that only someone who had been there -- to plan a murder, for instance -- could possibly know.

The case is a plum assignment for Emily Wallace, an attractive thirty-two-year-old assistant prosecutor. As she spends increasingly long hours preparing for the trial, a seemingly well-meaning neighbor offers to take care of her dog in her absence. Unaware of his violent past, she gives him a key to her home...

As Aldrich's trial is making headlines, her boss warns Emily that this high-profile case will reveal personal matters about her, such as the fact that she had a heart transplant. And, during the trial, Emily experiences sentiments that defy all reason and continue after Gregg Aldrich's fate is decided by the jury.

In the meantime, she does not realize that her own life is now at risk.

A Bookish Household

Tuesday, 25 August 2009
Assalamualaikum,

I found this interesting article by Abby Wong in The Sunday Star, 23/08/09.

REMEMBER that bookworm I was enamoured of because he was reading in public? The one I wrote about in Read, men! (Book Nook, April 19)? Well, I am happy to share with you, dear reader, that bookish fate not only brought us together again but that we then chatted, dated, and are now husband and wife, living with two young children who are showing early signs of bookishness.

Those who don’t love books might think my life with a bookworm would be boring. On the contrary. Though not as intense a reader as he was when I first laid eyes on him, Mr Bookworm still reads – and still isn’t satisfied with merely reading about things and places. He has to also see it, smell it, feel it, use it, observe it or even live it. And that, dear readers, certainly makes for an interesting life!

Once, a few years ago, mesmerised by the crowded and filthy Bombay (now Mumbai) that he read about in Suketu Mehta’s Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found, Mr Bookworm booked a flight to Bombay for the two of us – his curiosity about the city described in those pages would not let him rest until he had been there.

So, with book in bag and camera in hand, we were soon standing on top of a hill overseeing the Indian city’s slums. Quietly observing, he paid little attention to the pungent smell that emanated from the garbage all around us, and was absolutely saddened by the filth the people had to live in.

Starring at his face, I knew then my life would never be boring with Mr Bookworm because, together, we would learn and experience the world through reading and travelling.

It was our love for books that brought us together, and it is this love that has helped us build a beautiful home for our two young children. Not that our home is neat and tidy because books often lie around everywhere for various reasons.

Sitting in the garage these days is my copy of The Forever War by Dexter Filkins that I read whenever I am in there watching over my daughter as she plays. Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle – an old book from 1998 that I’m only reading now for some unfathomable reason – sits on our kitchen table amidst the clutter, ready for me to enjoy when I have my afternoon coffee and cookies.

Randy Charles Epping’s interesting The 21st Century Economy is on the bedside table, weekly magazines are scattered in the bathroom, readily allowing us to catch up on worldly affairs during our own private moments.

But in the early days, Mr Bookworm would stare at me from the corners of his eyes and frown at the books I’d leave scattered everywhere at first, silently protesting my habit of cluttering up the house. It was not until a few years ago when we ran out of space on our bookshelves did he join me in my way of living.

One day, to my pleasant surprise, Mr Bookworm placed bookends on some of the window sills in the house. “In this crazy world of hassling and bustling, a row of books in a window next to a potted fern can be highly effective in paring down our overly heightened senses,” Mr Bookworm pronounced. I could not agree more.

And so, even our windows became cluttered with books. Though some of the potted ferns have disappeared, our home remains obstinately full of bookish charm. I think so, anyway.

Perhaps I feel this way because I did not grow up in a book-cluttered house. Neither Mr Shakespeare nor Mr Orwell nor other great literary names were housemates then. My obsession with books did not start until I was in my teens, when my habit of spying people reading officially became a fetish at my first workplace, a bookstore.

What I did not experience in my childhood I do not want my children to miss. The best way, we figure, to make books their best friends is by creating a home in which books get in their way, in which books are often pronounced lost but later found in the most unexpected of places, in which books are like spices, bread, pencils, utensils, plants, constantly reminding our children of their importance – as well as unimportance in that they are an ordinary, not-to-be-remarked-upon part of life.

As my six-year-old son begins to take his first tiny steps into the magical world of Harry Potter, Mr Bookworm is scouting for a bigger house to make room for a bigger nook to accommodate the growing number of books and bookworms. “The ferns have to be outside this time,” he says, “but the bonsai stays in.”

What can I say? Bonsai has become his new engrossment thanks to a copy of Bonsai Basics he recently borrowed from the local library. As with Mumbai, he has to see it, smell it, feel it, use it, observe it, and live with it. My kind of guy.

■ Abby Wong has this advice for single young women: men who read are not only attractive but also make great husbands.

Sedang Menunggu Buku

Thursday, 13 August 2009
Assalamualaikum,

Hari ni dah masuk suku ke-3 tahun 2009. Pembelian buku aku sungguh tidak memberangsangkan. Tidak sampai lagi Rm500. Hmm..sebenarnya aku sedang menunggu buku yg dipesan dari MPH bulan 6 hari tu. Buku Dan Brown yang terbaru. Nampak gayanya bulan depan baru sampai buku tu. Sambil tu baca la buku-buku tahun lepas yang belum habis dibaca pun.

Satu masalah aku ni, tak boleh nak baca buku diluar lingkungan minat. Nak baca buku chic-lit rasa terhalang je. Kalau pegi kedai tu duk pegang-pegang, fikir nak beli, tak nak, nak beli, tak nak. Akhirnya letak balik kat rak. Nak pinjam pun rasa macam entah bila nak baca. Semacam ada halangan minda nak membaca buku-buku macam tu.

Books & An Update

Assalamualaikum,

Berikut senarai nya:

  1. Handle With Care: Motivating & Retaining Employees - Barbara A. Glanz
  2. Malaysia Dalam Peralihan: Ceritalah 1 - Karim Raslan
  3. The One-Page Project Manager - Clark A. Campbell
  4. Mikahil - Ramlee Awang Mursyid

  6. Yakjuj & Makjuj: Bencana Di Sebalik Gunung - Muhammad Alexander
  7. Mushaf Tajwid Beserta Terjemahan ke Dalam Bahasa Malaysia
  8. Majalah NUR Ogos 2009
  9. Blueprint Asia

Akak tau buku akak banyak buku hilang terutamanya semua buku karya Habiburrahaman El Shirazy & Zaid Akhtar. Akak sayang buku tau. Itulah harta akak!

Twilight Series

Friday, 26 December 2008
Assalamualaikum,

I must confess when I saw the movie poster for Twilight I was intrigued but not so fascinated as I had seen the books in bookstore many times but never have the urge to buy.

Then Aini posted in her blog links to e-book and I saw Stephenie Meyer name was on it. That piqued my interest so I downloaded all 4 e-books. And whoa! was I hooked. You see I have this fascination for English Fictions. It as if the language draws me into the story as a 3rd person point of view. This time I was obsessed with the Twilight series. How obsess?

Let see I started reading Book 1 on Thursday at 11 am and by 5.00am Friday morning I was half way through Book 4. Yep, I've been reading for 18 hours non-stop! and I had to go to work by 8.00am Friday! By non-stop I meant not eating or drinking except for prayer time (my weight hasn't depreciate though..haha) I finished reading Book 4 after I got home.

Yep, I'm bonkers all right and I set my own record at reading non-stop, Yeay! for me (my eyes can't stand the monitor anymore)

No, I have not seen the movies. Lets not spoil the imagination in my mind now shall we. :)

Granada Trilogy 1 = Rindu Andalusia

Thursday, 4 December 2008
Assalamualaikum,
Harga: RM 23.00
Karya: Radwa Ashour
Penerbit: Telaga Biru

I happened to chance upon this book while browsing the English Fiction novels. It was tucked in between the English novels & nicely wrapped in plastic so I had no knowing of what the story is about except for the synopis at the back of the book.

Anyhow, the book that I bought is an Indonesion version published by Telaga Biru. I Googled for Telaga Biru but couldn't find the book in their catalogue. Perhaps because it was just published in October 2008.

This story is by Radwa Ashour, an Egyption novelist. She even took first prize with her Andalusian trilogy, whose component novels are named after a place, a person and an event: Granada, Manama and Al-Rahil (The Departure). All are set around 1492, when the fall of Granada marked the end of Arab hegemony in Spain (See Aramco World, January/February 1993). Ashour was cited for her lyrical approach to the lives of ordinary people during a turbulent century that, said the judges, "also evokes present events." The work was published by Dar al-Hilal, Cairo. (source: Saudi Aramco World)

Review of the book can be read here.

The synopis of the book is (according to the back cover of the book):

Badan Inkuisisi Granda merampas semua kitab berbahsa Arab dari masjid, pusat sumber, sekolah & orang perseorangan Masjid diubah suai menjadi gereja & Katedral. Kalau ingin selamat minta sahaja dibaptis menjadi Kristian. Anak cucu Abu Jaafar bertahan menjadi Muslim.

Can't wait for the other 2 books to come out. Oh yes, I got 10% off from the bookstore for novels bought there. :D

Love Hate Relationship

Wednesday, 12 November 2008
Assalamualaikum,

I must confess that I have a love hate relationship with Malay novel. I love it because nowadays you get good quality Malay novels but I hate it because those novels never fails to make me cry (sometimes my eyes get swollen) and I can't put it down because the story lines are good.

So what I do is, I read it at night when everyone has gone to sleep so that they can't see that I'm bawling my eyes out (sob..sob) At times I have to stop reading Malay novels for a while and read other genre.

Oh! I do read English novels. But those are mostly mysteries, detectives & adventures. So no crying there. My favourite authors are Mary Clark Higgins (Queen of Mysteries), Patricia Cornwell (Kay Scarpetta series), Clive Cussler (NUMA series) and Ann Chee Min (Empress Dowager series). Somehow I'm not into family & chic lit genre for English novels.

Book for November

Tuesday, 4 November 2008
Assalamualaikum,

Book for November 2008.

UPDATE:

Tajuk: Bukan Yang Pertama
Karya: Salina Ibrahim
Terbitan: PTS Milenia
Harga: RM34.00

Ulasan:

Jumlah belian, hampir RM600 (uh..oh Huda, you have really gone overboard this time around)

Pesta Buku Selangor 2008 (2)

Assalamualaikum

  1. The Everything Home-Based Business Book - Yvonne Jeffrey & Sherri Linsenbach
  2. Kasih Disemai Sayang Dituai, Dr. Amida Abdul Hamid - Galeri Ilmu
  3. Suu Phea, Abu Hassan Morad - AMN Publications
  4. Tunas, Hlovate - Jemari Seni
  5. aA + bB, Hlovate - Jemari Seni
  6. Naqiah Khalida, Diya Noordin - Must Read Sdn Bhd
  7. Kuseru Namamu Kekasih, Maya Iris - PTS
  8. Curahan Cinta Niagara, Maya Iris - PTS
  9. Mencari Jalan Pulang: Daripada Sosialisme kepada Islam, Kassim Ahmad - ZI Publications Sdn Bhd
Huish!

Insya'Allah.

My 4th Day In Ireland

Saturday, 21 June 2008
Assalamualaikum,

The day start with a gloomy weather and it has been raining non-stop from morning until now. The sky is grey, in contrast to yesterday's sunny weather. Today I'm cooped up in the house. I'll be freezing & wet if I decide to go out.

So I took the opportunity to finish Ketika Cinta Bertasbih 2. I find the novel not as touching as I hoped for compared to Ayat-ayat Cinta. But the storyline is good though. Now I'm on to my second novel, Bohemian by Imaen. So far so good.

So Many Books

Monday, 16 June 2008

Assalamualaikum,

Final preparation before departing to 'somewhere' I bought few books. Few books that cost me RM250. That's my book stock for the month of June actually. And 2 books will be my gift to my husband-to-be during the akad nikah ceremony.

Well, I have to give him something back after 'sarung cincin'ceremony later on, but I cannot for the love of God waste my money on something that he doesn't wear. So finally after nearly 1 hour browsing through books, I bought 2 for him. Why book do you ask? Well, he is a PhD holder in Arabic Language so he loves reading. During the early stage of our relationship, he gave me a book. And I know he has loads of books, so why not add more to the collection. Furthermore, that is the only gift for my-husband-to-be. The other gifts is intended for his family.

What do you guys think?

'Candu' Resah

Friday, 23 May 2008
Assalamualaikum,

Semalam aku resah lagi. Gara-gara masalah yang menimpa begitu menyesak kalbu ku. Pening kepala ku. Disaat itu aku segera membayangkan akan keseronokan rasa & minda jika aku beli 'candu' lagi. Hilang segala onak rasa.

Wah! Banyaknya duit kamu ye? Nak buat macam mana, dah memang minat aku kat buku sejak kecil lagi.

"Akak dah lama baca novel tak?" tanya si gadis.
